Percocet Percodan Addiction
Percocet and Percodan are brand names for a form of oxycodone prescribed in the United States for the treatment of moderate to severe pain. It
has a typical duration of action of about 4 to 6 hours.
Other brand names are Roxicet and Tylox. Tablets contain 25 mg oxycodone hydrochloride and 325 mg acetaminophen; 5 mg oxycodone hydrochloride
and 325 mg acetaminophen; 7.5 mg oxycodone hydrochloride and 500 mg acetaminophen; 10 mg oxycodone hydrochloride and 650 mg acetaminophen.
Oxycodone is a very powerful and potentially addictive opiate synthesized from thebaine.
It is effective orally and is marketed in combination with aspirin (Percodan, Endodan, Roxiprin) or acetaminophen (Percocet, Endocet, Roxicet,
Tylox) for the relief of moderate to severe pain. More recently, ibuprofen (Motrin, Advil) has been added to oxycodone (Combunox).
Essentially, it has a similar action and addiction potential to the other opiate containing oxycodone, which is called Oxycontin. The key
difference being that Percocet and Percodan contain a shorter duration of action formulation, whereas the time release form of Oxycontin can last
up to 12 hours.
This shorter duration of action makes it possible, in most cases, to use either Suboxone or Subutex for detox.
There is another danger to Percocet if you are addicted - its the exposure to high doses of acetaminophen. This medication is not without risk
if taken in massive doses, which often occurs when you become addicted. High amounts can cause serious damage to your liver, even causing full
liver function shutdown and deaths. Another reason why you should seek treatment for the addiction immediately.
I have seen firsthand the ravage and devastation from such liver failure. It happens to otherwise healthy, vibrant people. So get help ASAP if
you are exposing yourself.
